Experience the refined beauty of Japanese calligraphy, a traditional art form, at Raku Suisan.
This calligraphy experience invites guests to engage with the art of writing characters using brush, ink, and paper in an authentic and serene setting. Classes are held at Salon de Raku under the guidance of Naoko Yokoyama, a calligrapher based in Kutchan Town. Even first-time participants are warmly welcomed, making this an accessible yet deeply enriching cultural experience.
Ms. Yokoyama’s work draws inspiration from the majestic natural landscapes of Niseko. Through delicate gradations of ink and the beauty of negative space, her calligraphy expresses a quiet “dialogue between nature and the soul.” Each brushstroke carries a sense of life, reflecting both the strength and stillness of the surrounding wilderness.
The subtle fragrance of ink, the tactile sensation of the brush, and the expressive variations unique to hand-brushed calligraphy create a meditative atmosphere. As the brush moves across the paper, the mind gradually quiets, allowing participants to experience a sense of inner calm. More than a technical discipline, calligraphy is a Japanese art that cultivates mindfulness and aesthetic sensibility.
